The Gasthof zum Hirschen is a woman’s realm - but at the Unterwirt riding stables, it’s the men who take the reins. Haflinger horses are our passion in life, and will gallop their way into your heart - we promise!

Horse-lovers’ holiday.

Blonde manes and a good-natured disposition
South Tyrol is the homeland of the Haflinger, and there are any number of the beautiful blonde manes in Jenesien. Indispensable assistants to mountain farmers of bygone days, the Haflingers of today are versatile horses for leisure riding. Good-natured creatures, they are the perfect size, midway between a pony and a large horse, with a broad back which makes learning to ride an easy business. Horse lovers appreciate the stamina and sure-footedness of Haflingers on long rides over hill and dale.

Unterwirt horse farm
Our riding stables and our herd of Haflingers have been on the go since 1969. Ever since it reopened in 2012, the Unterwirt horse farm has been an out-and-out equine paradise, complete with Haflinger stud farm, riding stables and horse hotel. Georg, the ‘son of the Hirschen’ has had a lifelong passion for horses since childhood; he has honed his love and Haflinger-handling skills in countless training courses - and it shows!

Georg and his abiding love of Haflingers.
He’s the only boy in the family - and, while the women of the family have always been in charge of the hotel, Georg has carried on the tradition of the Oberkofler men in running the stables and managing the herd of Haflingers at the Unterwirt. He inherited his love of these beautiful blonde-maned horses from his father, and is a keen horse-lover who understands every nuance of these animals. It’s no surprise, then, that Geirg is a successful breeder as well as a passionate horse-rider and superb riding instructor.
