Wine cellar: secrets of an age-old wine tradition
The love of wine begins for South Tyroleans in the cradle. For South Tyrol is the oldest wine growing region in the German-speaking realm, a fact many are unaware of. Already when the Romans pushed into what is today South Tyrol, there existed a flourishing wine culture and in time the Romans began debating the art of vineyards with the local population of South Tyrol. From the work in the vineyards through the harvesting of the grapes and to “Torggelen” one still sees in the behaviors and language many of the age-old traditions which have grown and matured with the centuries. The micro-climates, mineral-rich soils, countless hours of sun and cool nights offer the ideal conditions for the cultivation of great wines.
Passion creates exceptional wines
In the rustic wine cellar of the Hirschen the best South Tyrolean wines are stored. In them, one notices in the most positive sense the love and passion of the vintner and their unflinching belief in making their wines something special. We hold a special sympathy for the small producers from the immediate area. Often and with pleasure we invite them to present their wines at our weekly wine tastings in our wine cellar. There you yourself can be convinced that wine improves with altitude: as is commonly said here, around 1,000 meters above sea level tastes good.
Extraordinary harmony in the glass and on the plate
Simply excellent – namely with the prize for wine culture – the harmony between exquisite South Tyrolean wines and regional specialties meld on the tongue. Such was determined by the jury in its rating of our inn: “providing the best South Tyrolean lodging tradition is a matter of honor for the Oberkofler family, innkeepers of the country inn “Zum Hirschen” in Jenesien. The focal point of the kitchen is natural and fresh ingredients and it succeeds with flavorful dishes from predominately regional products. South Tyrolean wines play a central role as well. There are specific wine recommendations of South Tyrolean wines for every dish and menu; and a wide offering of quality wines are available by the glass for guests as well.” Of this review, sisters Maria and Petra Oberkofler, can be proud: “a regional kitchen and South Tyrolean wines: a combination which we fully subscribe to.”
